Can You Get Sleep Apnea Treatment Without Insurance?

Sleep apnea is a condition that affects millions of Americans, leading to sleep deprivation as well as a variety of other related problems.  When a person suffers from sleep apnea, their windpipe periodically closes – either partially or entirely – cutting off their flow of oxygen and causing them to wake up.  Even mild forms of sleep apnea can cause serious sleep deprivation (as well as loud snoring which disturbs any nearby sleepers), while chronic sleep apnea has been linked to serious cardiovascular issues such as heart attacks and strokes.

Anyone who suffers from sleep apnea needs to find remedies – but that can be difficult if you don’t have insurance.  This is particularly true because the most common treatment for sleep apnea – a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine – is extremely expensive without insurance.

Fortunately, there are alternatives.

Treating Sleep Apnea Without Insurance

I. Alternatives to CPAP machines

One of the easiest ways to keep the costs of sleep apnea management low is to find alternatives to CPAPs.  A successful sleep apnea treatment without CPAP being involved is entirely possible!  There are several potential options, including:

  • Oral appliances.  In many cases, a simple and relatively inexpensive oral appliance can achieve the same effect as CPAP treatment.  By physically moving the person’s jaw or tongue a bit, these appliances keep the airway free.  Plus, they’re more comfortable than CPAP masks, and quieter as well!
  • Weight loss.  While not true in all cases, sleep apnea is linked to being overweight.  Often, a simple diet – conducted under the observation of a holistic dentist – will be enough to reduce or eliminate the symptoms.
  • Changes in sleeping position.  Sleep apnea occurs most frequently in those who sleep on their backs.  Patients who can transition to side- or stomach-sleeping often need no other treatment!

Plus, a sleep apnea treatment without CPAP machines involved avoids wearing uncomfortable masks or having noisy air condensers running in the bedroom.  It’s a better approach overall.

II. In-office membership plans

More and more dentists are offering their own insurance-style membership plans. For a reasonable annual fee, you can get access to preventative dental exams and diagnostics like X-rays, as well as significant discounts on dental treatments – such as sleep apnea treatment.
